J-Curve

Resource in change

Set expectations prior to making a change.

It’s unrealistic to assume you can jump to the desired state but still common for people to expect it. You can however lessen the impact of a change through communication activities, training or support.

Kaikaku is Japanese for ‘radical change’. A big J curve.

Kaizen, or continuous improvement is incremental change where the J curve is tiny for each small improvement or doesn’t exist at all.

I’ve seen this diagram in many formats over the years and believe the concept comes from David Viney’s ‘J curve effect observed in change’.
