Infectious energy

I noticed something about one of the swimming instructors as I sat in the observation area at the leisure centre. Initially I looked over because he was talking loudly. But it wasn’t just that; the way he was interacting with the class was full of energy. It was infectious. Even his interactions with the parents seemed energetic. He looked like he loved his job and what he was doing seemed to matter. You want to be around someone like that.

Energy, enthusiasm and positivity start a chain reaction. They rub off on others, who then affect others. Negative energy is more like a vacuum. It doesn’t spread in quite the same way, it just slows momentum like friction on a rolling stone. The government bureaucrat who treats people as an inconvenience, the colleague who is always complaining. It’s what the hippies called good or bad vibes.

You can create energy or take it away. I don’t think that anyone really wants to take it away. It’s the situation they’re in. If you can’t get motivated or excited about what you’re doing, that’s a good tell that you’re in the wrong job. If you’re in an unhappy place, work to change it or move on.

Create infectious energy, or keep looking.
